Fees

  • If you are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid Provincial Medicare card, there is no charge for the first consultation. However, because British Columbia's Medical Services Plan ("MSP") does not pay for IVF or similar infertility treatment, you will have to pay yourself for some of the services we provide.

In addition, the specialized sperm functional assessments, sperm preparations for insemination and sperm freezing & banking that we perform at VFC are not covered by MSP and must be paid for.

Medications Used for In-Vitro Fertilization and Superovulation

The cost of the medications depends on a variety of factors, including the type of protocol chosen, your age, previous response to medications and your hormone results. The average cost is between $2500 and $6000. The costs are related to the amount of drug that has to be prescribed. Generally speaking, younger women require less medication, with lower costs. The BC Pharmacare program does not cover these costs, however there are some extended health care plans which may. You should check with your own health care plan before proceeding.

The medications used fall into 3 groups.
    1. For ovarian suppression. These drugs put the ovaries to sleep and allow us to manipulate the growth of the follicles using medications.
      They include:

    Synarel
    Suprefact
    Lupron
These are given either by subcutaneous injection or by nasal spray.

    2. For ovarian stimulation
      These include: Puregon
    Gonal F
    Luveris
    Bravelle
    Repronex

    3. For egg maturation and then support of the endometrium
      These include: HCG
    Prometrium
    Estradot patch
    Estrace

Other medications which may be used during an IVF cycle include:

    Antibiotics Doxycycline
    Steroids Medrol
    Aspirin Baby aspirin (81mg)
    Vitamins C, E, Folic acid
